It is no mystery why people spend a few hundred dollars for an automatic litter box. Scooping and cleaning a cat box is fairly nasty, particularly with more than one cat in a house. There have been a lot of automatic litter boxes generated over the past 10 years, but most of them did not garner great reviews. Some were unsafe and noisy or they were more trouble than they were truly worth. Two of the recent models have been excellent sellers in the pet supply marketplace, however. Both Litter Robot reviews and the Cat Genie ratings are quite positive.

The Litter Robot really looks like a small robot with a sphere-shaped head. The dome top has an entrance for the cat above a bit step that may switch on the system. The dome is filled with regular clumping litter, and this is where the kitty will do his "business". Underneath is a plate lined with an ordinary kitchen trash bag. As soon as the cat is done, Litter Robot sifts out the clumps and solid waste materials and deposits this into the bottom tray.

While this is a costly bit of technology, Litter Robot uses normal store bought clumping litter and garbage tote bags, and it is more conservative with litter. It would only use about half the amount standard boxes use over time. Over time, one can save a bit of money by using it. There are downsides, however. This is a large unit that might not fit in all bathrooms. Unfortunately, it may be too intimidating for some cats or frighten them. They are funny creatures and sometimes protest changes.

The Cat Genie is a little more complicated in design. It looks a lot like a little toilet, only the container is filled with special granules instead of normal kitty litter. The cat uses the granules as usual, and then the toilet "flushes" itself on a seven minute cycle. There is an automatic scoop that removes solid waste, and the urine filters through the granules to the disposal tray underneath. The flushing action also cleans the bowl with a solution contained in a special cartridge.

There are some negative factors for Cat Genie as well. The unit must be hooked to a water source and an electrical outlet. For that reason it might be difficult for some to find a space appropriate for the device. Cat Genie also requires special granules and cleaning cartridges, which can become a financial burden over time. As with the other device, there is still the possibility of the cat rejecting the unit and refusing to use it.

Robotic litter boxes are great time savers, and they allow people to avoid the nastiness of cat waste as much as possible. For this reason alone lots of people are willing to invest a chunk of change in the technology.

This Litter Robot review is quite positive in general with the only recurring complaint being its size. Cat Genie has good feedback except for the cost and annoyance of the special accessories and the need for a water hook-up. In the end, the cats and kittens are likely to have the last say since they are the ones who will choose whether they actually utilize the new gadget.
